Ukrainian coffee house filled Urban Abbey

Event organizer, Lisa Klymenko, is hopeful that the Ukrainian coffee house will continue to be held annually.

THUNDER BAY — Whether its learning traditional Ukrainian dances, singing some songs or watching performances, the Ukrainian coffee house had it all.

The Urban Abbey was filled up on Saturday with more than 100 people between 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., for the second annual Ukrainian coffee house.

“Today we're celebrating Ukrainian culture and especially we're celebrating the young people that are in our community.

“We've got a lot of young performers today that we're very excited about,” said Lisa Klymenko, who organized the event.

Klymenko said there was a lot to see and do on Saturday.

“We're going to have a variety of performances. We're going to have some people that are going to be singing, some people that are dancing, some people just playing instruments, and for the most part, it'll be Ukrainian music,” she said.

Some performers include, Chaban Ukrainian Dance Group, Lastivka Bandura Capella, Zorya Ukrainian Dance Association and Dave Petrash.

Klymenko is in charge of the Zhuravli Ukrainian Folk Ensemble, who opened up the afternoon with songs.

There were treats to be sampled from SUKHANOV Ukrainian Kitchen and beverages were provided.

It is the hope to continue to host the event each year, Klymenko said, adding that there were more people this year than last.
