There’s another big union merge in the works.

On the heels of the CAW and CEP becoming known as Uniform, the United Steelworkers and Telecommunications Workers Union are now looking to join forces.

The unions arrived at a tentative merger agreement Thursday.

There's been a working agreement in place between the two entities for the past three years.  The TWU represents nearly 13,000 members across the country, while the United Steelworkers represent 225,000, including nearly 2,000 members here in Thunder Bay.

Local USW spokesman Herb Daniher says the merger isn't simply about growth, it's about becoming more effective.

Daniher anticipates the telecommunications workers will retain a measure of autonomy under the United Steelworkers umbrella.

In a joint press release issued by the unions, TWU President Lee Riggs says the merger is "about better bargaining power, about better service to members and about a strong voice for telecommunication workers"
