THUNDER BAY -- Students and staff were forced to evacuate Lakehead University's Centennial building Tuesday afternoon.

The evacuation followed reports that people had detected an odour of smoke. A fire alarm was called in around 12:30 when the smell became evident on the first and second floor of the building.

Four pumper trucks and a command vehicle were dispatched to the scene and firefighters began a floor-by-floor search.

Most students waited patiently in the Agora area while fire crews looked for the cause.

Fire crews eventually traced the source to a grate where they found some papers that had been burned.
