THUNDER BAY – A neighbour was quick to call in a fire Wednesday evening after hearing screams for help coming from a Simpson Street residence.
According to a Thunder Bay Fire Rescue release, fire fighters responded to a structural fire called in by neighbours after hearing the lone occupant screaming for help on Wednesday around 6:35 p.m.
Fire crews arrived on scene to discover the rear of the single-family home engulfed in flames. A second alarm was initiated.
The first arriving crew stretched out the fully charged hand line to the side of the structure to apply water to the burning roof area from outside, while the aerial ladder positioned itself in a location upwind.
The exterior attack knocked down the fire enough so an interior fire attack could commence with crews entering the rear of the house.
The second pumper secured the water supply at the nearby hydrant to keep enough water flowing.
Once the multiple responding units arrived there were numerous hand lines surrounding the fire from all locations.
Fire officials say the fire in the attic proved stubborn so the aerial ladder was utilized to gain a better angle to fight the fire while breaching the roof to allow access.
An interior search of the basement and the main floor showed nothing found in the house with the uninjured lone male being assisted by the TBPS then taken care of by the Red Cross.
One firefighter suffered minor injuries while performing their duties but did not require medical attention.
This fire is under investigation to determine the cause and origin of this incident with fire inspectors expected on the scene early Thursday morning.
