Vandalism continues as traffic to conservation areas increases during COVID-19 (2 Photos)

The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority says it's 'frustrating'

THUNDER BAY — The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority is expressing frustration with the amount of vandalism and littering happening at its nature reserves.

In a Facebook post Monday, the LRCA released photos of a damaged fence and bags of garbage deposited at the Mission Marsh Conservation Area.

The message began "Just another day at Mission Island Conservation Area."

The authority said there's no end to the garbage and vandalism it's dealing with day after day.

"It's especially frustrating when we have limited staff and limited funds and are trying to manage double the visitors we usually see because of the pandemic."

The LRCA appealed to visitors to put $2.00 in the coin box to support authority programs rather than vandalizing its infrastructure and dumping garbage in conservation areas.

The authority declined a request from Dougall Media to elaborate on the extent of the problem this year.
