Vandals attack new playground at Vickers Park

Lines were spraypainted on multiple pieces of playground equipment that went into service this summer

THUNDER BAY — It didn't take long for vandals to strike at the new playground at Vickers Park.

Someone spray-painted lines on multiple portions of the recently-installed play structures in the popular southside park at some point over the weekend.

"What was described to me was specifically graffiti paint, and not really any kind of messaging or anything. It was just very much paint lines," said Cory Halvorsen, manager of parks and open spaces for the City of Thunder Bay.

"It's definitely unfortunate. We do not want to see this type of incident occur, especially on a wonderful playground setup that everyone's been appreciative to be using, and has been anticipating for some time."

"We really do need people to think hard before they do something like that, because it's definitely a negative for the whole community when it occurs."

City workers were dispatched to the park Monday morning to remove the graffiti paint, and Halvorsen said they were able to do so.

He said it's not feasible to monitor playgrounds 24 hours a day, but if the city receives information about the possible identity of perpetrators, it would bring that forward to police.
