Victims of fatal Highway 102 crash identified

THUNDER BAY – Police identified the two victims of a fatal highway crash that took place Monday night on Highway 102 near the Kaministiquia Bridge.

The two deceased have been identified as 44-year-old Bidzina Berdzenishvili from Prince Albert, Sask., and 35-year-old Jonathon Whitehead from Nibinamik First Nation.

Police, in a release issued Tuesday morning, say a westbound pickup truck and westbound SUV collided. A secondary collision occurred between the SUV and an eastbound car.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue were dispatched to the scene to aid OPP, paramedics and the Kaministiquia Fire Department in rescue efforts.

The 44-year-old driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene and there were no other occupants in that vehicle.

The 35-year-old driver of the SUV was transported to hospital by ambulance where he was pronounced dead.

Five passengers in the SUV were transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries and the driver of the pickup truck was not injured.

The investigation is ongoing.
