THUNDER BAY — Rapidly-melting snow combined with recent rainfall continues to cause flooding or washouts on numerous Northwestern Ontario roads.

As of Tuesday morning, Ontario 511 reported about a dozen cases, including several in the Dryden, Fort Frances and Kenora areas.

Highway 105 to Red Lake was closed in two locations.

The first was 20 kilometres south of Red Lake, where there's a washout.

The other was between Vermilion Bay and Highway 609, due to water over the road.

Crews have repaired another washout on the same highway, at Caribou Creek, by installing a new culvert and backfilling with blast rock.

However the creek continued to rise Tuesday, and began overflowing the highway south of the repair.

The Ministry of Transportation was monitoring the situation.

Video posted on the Facebook page of NWORoads.ca also showed water completely covering Highway 17 just east of Vermilion Bay.

Traffic control was in place, but the highway remained open as of late Tuesday afternoon.

An MTO spokesperson said the water was still rising, and that the ministry would continue to monitor the situation.
