OLIVER PAIPOONGE – The Kam River Fighting Walleye shook off a four-goal outburst by the Thunder Bay North Stars to eke out an overtime win on Friday night.
Evan Lachimea scored the game-tying goal with 72 seconds to go in regulation and Jeremy Dunmore potted the game-winner 38 seconds into the extra frame, earning the host Fighting Walleye a 5-4 win at the Norwest Arena.
Kam River staked itself to a 3-0 lead in the second on goals by Kaden Goodwin, Ryan Daponte and Riley Borody.
But the North Stars didn’t stay down for long.
Cameron Dial got them on the board at 14:40 of the middle stanza and Easton Mikus and Alex Remenda scored seven minutes apart in the third to even the score. Cohen Tangedal put the North Stars in front at 17:49 of the third, but the lead lasted all of 59 seconds.
Ashton Sadauskas stopped 36 of 40 Thunder Bay shots to earn the win between the pipes for Kam River. Keenan Marks was good on 52 of 57 Kam River shots.
Three other SIJHL games scheduled for Friday night were cancelled due to weather. Fort Frances was slated to travel to Red Lake, but their bus went off the road.
Kenora and Wisconsin and Sioux Lookout and Dryden were also postponed.
The North Stars are scheduled to travel to Dryden on Saturday, while Kam River will head to Sioux Lookout to take on the Bombers.
