THUNDER BAY -- A fire in a compactor behind the WalMart on Memorial Avenue forced firefighters to evacuate the building after smoke spread throughout the usually busy store.

District Chief Brent McPhail on Friday afternoon said it was a mostly routine call.

"We were called to an alarm around 2 o'clock in the afternoon for a possible structural fire. When we arrived some smoke had migrated into the building, but it was contained to a compactor in the grocery section. Fire crews quickly applied water and put the fire out and under control," McPhail said.

"Then it was just a matter of clearing smoke from the building and calling an inspector down to check on everything."

McPhail said no one was injured in the fire.

A WalMart employee said the store remains closed indefinitely and was unsure when it might reopen.
