THUNDER BAY — Area residents can expect a mixture of snow and rain over the weekend.

Despite warm temperatures on Friday, Environment Canada is predicting a weather system will bring rain, and possibly upwards of 15 centimetres of snow or more.

Steven Flisfeder is a warning preparedness meteorologist and said snow will likely be heaviest Monday morning.

"You'll start to see a bit of shower activity in the late evening Sunday and continue overnight into Monday morning. Especially the nearer you are to the shore," Flisfeder said.

"Monday, nearer the shore, you're more likely to see rain or a rain-snow mix than just snow, and the further inland you are, to the west and to the north, it's going to be pretty much all snow.

"In terms of accumulations, we're looking at just a few centimetres with that rain-snow mix, for those closer to Lake Superior. Inland, you could be seeing upwards of 15 centimetres or more."

The meteorologist said current predictions indicate that the weather system should taper off by Monday evening or early Tuesday morning.

It's not expected to stay long, though, he indicated that forecast models show above-zero temperatures for April will continue, especially by Wednesday.

On a long-range forecast, Flisfeder said more snowfall is still possible over the next few weeks, with a more definitive end to snow likely not until early to mid-May.
