Waverley Park pavilion concert attracts a crowd

Weekly concerts will provide a range of music genres

THUNDER BAY — A new concert series in Waverley Park is catching the public's interest.

On Monday night, an estimated 100 spectators gathered in the park for the weekly Pavilion Concert Series.

The featured performers were the Robin Ranger Band and Flipper Flannigan's Flat Footed Four.

The weekly concerts are free, and are sponsored by the Canadian Federation of Musicians, the City of Thunder Bay, and the Coalition for Waverley Park.

Over the course of the summer, it will include a cross-section of genres such as jazz, folk and others.

Keith Nymark, president of the coalition, said he expects the concerts will grow in popularity in the coming weeks, and provide exposure for deserving local musicians.

"We're interested in supporting the musicians who aren't large enough to be down at the waterfront on the big stage. It's the local musicians who may be up and coming, or maybe just like playing a smaller venue, so we think this is going to be perfect for that,"  he said Monday evening in an interview at the park.

On July 9, the performers will be Bottom of the Barrel and the Martin Blanchet Jazz Quartet.

The concert runs from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
