THUNDER BAY — A suspect is in custody following an alleged attempted robbery involving a weapon.

City police said they were called to the LCBO in the 100 block of Cumberland Street North on Wednesday afternoon, after a report of a robbery that had just taken place.

According to a release issued by police, the accused had allegedly entered the location and attempted to conceal merchandise. He was confronted by staff and attempted to leave. Staff were able to retrieve the merchandise before the man fled. The accused allegedly brandished a knife at staff while still in the store.

An officer with Thunder Bay Police’s break, enter and robbery unit also responded and shortly afterwards located an individual matching the suspect’s description.

He was arrested and taken into custody.

A 41-year-old male is charged with assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose. He appeared in court on Thursday and has been remanded into custody.

It is Newswatch policy not to name suspects in cases in which it is unlikely we will follow the case through to its conclusion in court.
