Despite the winter-like weather, Ontario’s forest fire season officially began on Monday.

Because of the fresh snowfalls, officials with Ontario’s Ministry of Natural Resources are predicting a slow start to the fire season. Information officer Heather Pridham says so far the weather is helping to keep things under control.

“Right now the Northwest region is covered in a heavy blanket of snow so we haven’t had any Spring fires as of yet, and it doesn’t look like we’re going to get any forest fires soon,” Pridham told CKPR Radio.

“Mother nature is definitely delaying this forest fire season.”

At this time last year there were already more than a dozen fires burning in this region.
