THUNDER BAY -- Frederica Street was a hive of activity on Saturday afternoon, as people from all over Thunder Bay flocked to the south-side to take part in the 40th annual Westfort Street Fair.
It was a sight for sore eyes, said organizer Mark Nowak, the one-day festival returning to its roots after scaling things back last year due to COVID-19.
Local businesses opened their doors and brought merchandise onto the sidewalks, the kid-favourite Shriner's train was motoring up and down the street and there was plenty of food to choose from -- and tacos everywhere.
The fair was just what organizer Mark Nowak had hoped it would be, and then some, he said.
"We couldn't be happier as an association," Nowak said. "It was exactly what we were hoping for - nice weather, everybody's out enjoying it, there's lots of food and lot of activities for the kids and everyone seems to be really having a good time."
Nowak said it's important to host events like the Westfort Street Fair, to showcase the great things going on in the neighbourhood, located on Thunder Bay's south-side.
"It's a community-oriented event. It's the 40th anniversary. We've been doing this for 40 years and to our knowledge, it's the longest running neighbourhood fair in the city," he said. "We really enjoy the fact we get a lot of people out, not only the people who live here in Westfort, but also visiting from other neighbourhoods.
"It gives us a chance to showcase our business community and just gives everyone an activity to get together and have a good time."
The fair continues until 5 p.m.
