The Winnie the Pooh monument in White River has been hit with a discouraging case of vandalism. OPP say someone has stolen a bronze plaque from the site, which chronicles the history of the famous character and the bear's relationship with White River.
The Winnie the Pooh statue was created back in 1992 and has become a popular tourist stop along Highway 17.
OPP say sometime between Sunday afternoon and Monday morning the plaque was forcibly removed from its wooden stand. The plaque is valued at about $1,000 and explains how a black bear cub was purchased by a Winnipeg soldier as he passed through the area on his way to Britain during the First World War.
The bear, named Winnie, wound up in the London Zoo and become the inspiration for the books by A.A.Milne.
Janice Chislett, who runs the local tourist information centre, said the monument brings a lot of people to White River everyone in the community is disappointed by the theft. Anyone with information is asked to call OPP or Crimestoppers.
