Wind leads to special weather statement for city

Gusts of up to 80 kilometres per hour could occur late Sunday afternoon.

THUNDER BAY -- Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for the city of Thunder Bay.

The government weather service on Sunday afternoon says strong winds and gusts are possible late in the afternoon, Several social media posts show downed tree branches in the area.

The gusts could reach as high as 70 to 80 kilometres per hour.

They are expected to end early Sunday evening. Environment Canada warns strong winds may toss loose objects or cause tree branches to break. Utility outages may occur.

Synergy North is reporting power outages affecting about 1,600 customers in the West Arthur Stret and North McIntyre area.
