THUNDER BAY — On Saturday and Sunday, Fort William Historical Park is hosting the Winter Carnival.
Patrick Morash is the park's general manager and noted the lack of winter weather was a challenge when it came to planning this year's event.
"Our team here is incredibly adept and flexible, and we were saving snow while we had it. We were stockpiling snow and protecting it very carefully so the sugar folks could have clean snow that we could use to build our castle in the front and do some snow sculpting as well."
Morash said they had outdoor skating plans this year, too.
"We had grand plans for a really lovely skating path that was all ready to go, and then Mother Nature did her thing, but we still have lots of wonderful things for everybody to take part in."
Lots of activities and musical performances will be happening on both days between 11 am and 5 pm, including access to the Zorb track, which is like a giant hamster ball for humans to roll around the farm field in.
Dog sledding will only be available at the park on Sunday.
Morash anticipates 1,200 to 1,400 people to come through for the Winter Carnival this year, especially after the kick-off of the Canada Winter Games Friday night.
