Although winter hasn’t cooperated, the organizer of Winter Fun Days says people have still been having fun this year.
Every Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. there are a host of winter activities down at the waterfront.
“We’re trying to encourage people to get outdoors and enjoy what makes winter wonderful here in Thunder Bay,” Prince Arthur’s Landing programmer Sophie Best said.
“It’s been tricky, we’ve had to come up with some alternatives for the weather but surprisingly people are still embracing the activity.”
Like last weekend when the featured event was snowshoeing. The problem was there was no snow to walk on. Still people had fun trying the shoes on and walking on the grass. This weekend brought snow, which people were still digging their way out of Sunday morning, but it also brought temperatures that dipped below -30 C with the wind. When it’s that cold it makes it difficult to entice people to skate, which was the event this Sunday. Best had skating aids and celebrity mascot Wolfie all lined up, but only three people braved the chill to hit the ice.
She’s optimistic though that if the snow stays, people will be out to enjoy future events. Next Sunday is a skijoring demonstration that Best is excited for. On Feb. 17, local carvers will show off their skills, making snow sculptures that will be on display when the city hosts a winter festival at the waterfront on Family Day.
