THUNDER BAY — During a traffic stop, a driver used "ingenuity" to control the throttle, much to the chagrin of Thunder Bay police officers.

Police pulled over a vehicle on Pacific Avenue around 3:30 p.m. Jan. 22 for a suspended driver's licence.

The officer noticed a number of infractions, and the 25-year-old driver was charged with: driving under suspension, operating a vehicle with no insurance, using plates not authorized for the vehicle, being a G1 driver unaccompanied by a qualified driver and not having a permit for the vehicle.

TBPS posted part of body-worn camera footage obtained during the incident where the driver explained the purpose of a shoelace attached to the vehicle  on the police service's Facebook page.

When the driver pulled on the shoelace, the engine can be heard revving.

To anyone who needs a shoelace to operate their vehicle, said police in the social media post, "you shouldn't be driving it."

The 25-year-old driver was also charged with operating an unsafe vehicle, and the vehicle was deemed unfit for the road.
