TORONTO – A little long-distance shooting in the final 40 seconds of Friday night’s game against the York Lions helped push the Lakehead Thunderwolves women’s basketball team into the win column for just the third time this season.
Ally Burke hit a trey with 37 seconds to go in regulation to give the Thunderwolves a two-point lead, and after York’s Alexis Grewal hit a two-pointer to tie it with 11 seconds left, Thunder Bay’s Sara Azzolini buried a three at the buzzer to deliver the win.
Lakehead outscored York 26-18 in the fourth quarter.
Burke, the T-Wolves leading scorer, finished with a team-high 19 points.
Azzolini, Kirpa Brar, Kelly-Ann Coulombe and Eva Guiler each had nine points for LU, who snapped a six-game losing streak with the road triumph.
York’s Kiara Leveridge led all scorers with 21 points and hauled in 15 rebounds for the double-double.
Lakehead (3-12) and York (4-11) meet again on Saturday night at the Tait McKenzie Centre.
