THUNDER BAY – Both Thunder Bay rinks in contention at the Northern Ontario U18 girls curling championship emerged victorious on Thursday morning.
Lily Wright, who curls out of the Kakabeka Falls Curling Club, scored three in the fourth end and then hung on to edge New Liskeard’s Rhya Baker 7-6 to improve to 2-0 at the event, being contested in Timmins.
Meanwhile Claire Dubinsky rebounded after a disastrous finish in her Wednesday night opener, doubling up Timmins’ Skye Bergounhon 10-5 to even her record at 1-1.
Dubinsky, lead Lily Ariganello, second Bella McCarville and third Rylie Paul, put three-enders on three separate occasions to secure the win. Bergounhon scored three in the fourth to erase a 4-1 Dubinsky lead at the time, but was overpowered the rest of the way.
Wright, lead Isabella Bron, second Sienna Desilets and third Caitlin Nephin, will be back on the ice at 1 p.m. on Thursday to face Bergounhon.
Dubninsky’s next match is Thursday night against Rihanna Third of Cochrane.
The boys U18 championship gets underway on Thursday evening.
Thunder Bay’s Josh Hari takes on Sault Ste. Marie, while Jacob Curtis will play North Bay’s Riley Winters. Both games get under way at 7:30 p.m.
