TORONTO — Voters across Ontario will be heading to the polls one month from now.

The premier's office has confirmed that Ontario's parliament will be dissolved as of 4 pm Tuesday.

The writs will be issued on Wednesday and a general election held on Feb. 27, according to a news release from the province.

The news was expected. Doug Ford announced his intention to call the snap election on Friday.

The majority conservative government had 16 months remaining in their current mandate. Ford said he made decision to call an early election in order to secure a strong mandate to combat US president Donald Trump's trade tariffs.

Several politicians across the region have already declared their intention to run.

In Thunder Bay–Superior North NDP incumbent Lise Vaugeois will come up against current Thunder Bay city councillor Brian Hamilton, who is running for the Liberals.

Conservative MPP Kevin Holland will be up against former MPP Judith Montieth-Farrell of the NDP in Thunder Bay–Atikokan and Stephen Margarit, a former Thunder Bay council candidate, will join that race under the Liberal banner.

In Kenora–Rainy River Ford Cabinet minister Greg Rickford has announced he is running again. No word so far on who will run against him

Kiiwetinoong MPP Sol Mamakwa, an NDP deputy leader, will be up against the Green Party's Carolyn Spicer.

No other candidates have publicly declared their intention to run in those ridings as of Tuesday afternoon.
