Youngster sent to hospital after Wiley Street fire

Firefighters say youth got out of the two-storey home on their own after fire broke on the second floor.

THUNDER BAY – A youth managed to escape a burning Wiley Street home on Friday night, but was taken to hospital by paramedics as a precaution.

Firefighters responded to the evening blaze and arrived to find smoke and flames pouring from the two-storey residence.

“The report came in through the dispatch that there was one child in the house. On our arrival we had heavy fire showing from the front side of the building. Bystanders on the outside on the sidewalk stated the child had self-evacuated,” said Thunder Bay Fire Rescue District Chief John Kaplanis.

“Firefighters made a very quick, aggressive attack. We made an interior search, just to make sure in fact everybody was out of the house and that was the case.”

Kaplanis said the fire caused heavy fire, heat and smoke damage to the second floor, and heavy smoke damage to the home’s main floor.

“The cause of the fire at this time is still under investigation,” he said.
