THUNDER BAY – A late-night joyride has led to a Thunder Bay youth facing several charges.

Thunder Bay Police Service officers were dispatched to George Burke Park around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday after receiving reports of a motorized bike being driven erratically.

Police say a male suspect failed to stop for responding officers and drove away. Officers did not pursue the suspect.

Later, other officers observed an individual and bike matching the suspect description weaving through traffic and driving on sidewalks in the area of Arthur Street and Catherine Street.

The suspect then collided with a stopped police cruiser. The suspect briefly fled on foot before being located and arrested.

A section of Arthur Street was closed as a result of the investigation. Police said they expected the roadway to reopen in the afternoon.

A 17-year-old male from Thunder Bay is charged with three counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle as well as flight from a peace officer, failure to remain and impaired operation of a vehicle. The identity of the accused cannot be disclosed as per the Youth Criminal Justice Act. The accused had been under a 90-day driver’s licence suspension order.

The accused appeared in court on Wednesday and was remanded into custody with a future appearance date.
