EABAMETOONG FIRST NATION – An Eabametoong First Nation youth has been charged with second-degree murder in the killing a 26-year-old woman in the remote, fly-in community.
Ontario Provincial Police on Wednesday said the accused, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was initially arrested and charged with two counts each of aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose for an incident that occurred in the community on July 8. OPP were called in four days later to assist Nishnawbe Aski Police Service.
The victim, identified as Arlene Wapoose of Fort Hope First Nation, later died of her injuries.
The accused was then re-arrested and charged in her killing.
The youth is being held in custody pending a bail hearing.
Nishnawbe Aski Police Service and the OPP’s Northwest Region crime unit are continuing the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
