THUNDER BAY — Nearly four years to the day after the body of 14-year-old Kayliegh Ivall was found in a wooded area on the city’s north side, the youth charged in connection to her death is expected to stand trial.
The youth, who was 14 when charged and cannot be named in accordance with the Youth Criminal Justice Act, is expected to stand trial in April 2024 on the charge of first-degree murder.
Trial dates were put on the record during a hearing held last week. The trial is anticipated to open on April 15, 2024, and is scheduled for 10 days. Pre-trial applications will be heard in January 2024.
A preliminary hearing for the youth was held in April 2022 before Justice Elaine Burton.
The youth was first charged with first-degree murder on May 4, 2020 following the discovery of Ivall’s body in wooded area near Arundel Street and Lyon Boulevard on April 27.
Ivall was first reported missing the evening prior on April 26, 2020.
Jarett Sainnawap, 24, was also arrested and initially charged with first-degree murder on May 6, 2020, but he has since pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of accessory after the fact to murder.
Sainnawap was sentenced to three years in custody to be followed by three years probation. With pre-sentence custody enhanced to 30 months, Sainnawap had six months left to serve after the sentence was handed down in December 2021.
According to an agreed statement of facts read into the court record during Sainnawap’s sentencing, on the evening of April 26, 2020, Ivall followed Sainnawap and the youth into the wooded area and was hit on the head with a bottle and then stabbed numerous times.
A post-mortem report determined Ivall died as a result of multiple stab wounds.
The accessory after the fact to murder charge against Sainnawap related to him attempting to conceal the body, discarding her belongings, and sheltering the youth.
