THUNDER BAY - A 17-year-old youth wanted in connection to an Amelia Street homicide last November has been arrested in Cambridge, Ont.
The youth, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was taken into custody by Waterloo Regional Police late Tuesday afternoon.
There was a large police presence in Cambridge in the area of McNaughton Street shortly before the arrest was made.
The youth was wanted for first-degree murder in connection to the shooting death of 31-year-old Conrad Bannon in an apartment complex on the 200 block of Amelia Street in the early morning hours of Nov. 4, 2021.
First responders who arrived on the scene discovered a male who had injuries consistent with a shooting and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim was later identified as Bannon.
As part of the investigation, the Thunder Bay Police Service identified the Cambridge youth as a suspect and a Canada-wide warrant was issued for the youth’s arrest.
The youth, who is from Cambridge, appeared via video in a Thunder Bay Courtroom on Wednesday and was remanded into custody for a future court date.
The Thunder Bay Police Service is making arrangements to transfer the youth back to the city.
The shooting death of Bannon is one of several violent incidents in the city involving firearms, which has been increasing steadily over the last several years, along with drug and gang activity.
