McCarville opens with win at Roar of the Rings

OTTAWA – Krista McCarville got off to the start she was looking for at the Canadian Olympic women’s curling trials in the nation’s capital.

The 35-year-old skip from Thunder Bay soundly defeated Saskatchewan’s Michelle Englot 9-4, taking the lead for good with a deuce in the sixth end to go up 5-3. Leading 7-4 in the ninth, McCarville stole a pair to end the opening match for both teams at the Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings.

McCarville, lead Sarah Potts, second Ashley Sippala and third Kendra Lilly take on Casey Scheidegger in Draw 4 on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.

In other action:

Jennifer Jones 9, Val Sweeting 6: Jones, the reigning Olympic champion, overcame a 3-0 deficit after one end to claim victory in Draw 2.

Chelsea Carey 8, Rachel Homan 4: Carey, the 2016 Scotties Tournament of Hearts champion doubled up the hometown favourite Homan, scoring two in the fifth and eighth ends to pave the way to victory in Draw 1.

Casey Scheidegger 6, Allison Flaxey 5: Scheidegger scored one in the 10th end to edge Flaxey in the other Draw 1 match.
