GUELPH, Ont. – Nic Renyard was the star of the show on Thursday night.
The second-year Lakehead Thunderwolves goaltender made 42 saves to earn his first Ontario University Athletics shutout, blanking the Guelph Gryphons 3-0 as his team kicked off its second three-game road trip of the season.
Dylan Butler, Daniel Del Paggio and Sam Schutt scored first-period goals to lead the Thunderwolves offensive attack. Tomas Soustal picked up a pair of assists for Lakehead, who were outshot 16-13 in the second and 18-8 in the third.
With the win, Lakehead improved to 8-4-0, tied for second in the OUA West. The eighth-place Gryphons slipped to 3-7-2.
The Thunderwolves take on Laurier (4-7-0) on Friday night and conclude their eastern swing with a trip to Waterloo to tangle with the Warriors (2-7-3).
They conclude the pre-Christmas portion of their schedule next Friday and Saturday against No. 6 Ryerson.
