It is with heavy hearts the family announce the passing of Alan after a two month stay in hospital in Rome, Italy on November 2, 2023.
Alan was born to Emmett and Hazel Prien on Oct 9th, 1943 in Geraldton, Ontario. He was the eldest of 5 children including sisters Janice, Eileen, Lorraine and brother Stanley.
After the family moved to Loglac, he started working at Avard’s store at age 10, The family was always grateful for fruit and veggies he was able to bring home on Saturday nights as the store was of course closed on Sundays.
Alan loved learning and education was of utmost importance to him. upon completion of grade 13 he was honoured to be chosen valedictorian at the Geraldton Composite High School. From there he went to the University of Toronto where he received his B.A. in History and Political Science.
He was then hired by the Canadian Government for approximately 15 years in various positions then went to work for the United Nations International Federation of Agricultural Development until his retirement, His various positions with both organizations took him to many interesting countries.
Alan married his wife Gyongver in 1968 in England, and they were inseparable, enjoying any trips for work and pleasure. They both enjoyed good food, good wine and played many games of tennis together. He was also a lifelong Maple Leafs fan never giving up hope that one day they would win another Stanley Cup. His favourite player of all time was Johnny Bower and Janice was able to get him a book signed by Johnny Bower for his 65th. birthday.
Alan had many life long friends that he stayed in touch with and was always interested in knowing how they were doing, getting in touch with many on his annual trips to Thunder Bay.
His best friend of 60+ years, Ron Fromstein, whom he met on his first day of University, “and shared the same birthday”, was able to be in Rome to help celebrate Alan’s 80th. birthday along with sisters Janice, Eileen and Lorraine. Of course Alan’s wife Gyongyi, her sister Ildiko, niece Mikki and Ron’s good friend Edi were also present, although the day was subdued being limited to hospital visits.
Alan was predeceased by brother Stanley (1971), father Emmett(1994), mother Hazel(2000). Also predeceased by numerous family members on his wife’s side.
Survived by wife Gyongyi, sisters Janice(Lewis Parker), Eileen(Bob Dalzell), and Lorraine(Paul Pitura) and their families. Also survived by Gyongyi‘S three sisters Kinga, Ildiko, Emoke and their families.
Funeral services were held in Rome on November 4, 2023.
A celebration of life will be held in Thunder Bay in the spring to accommodate family members from the east and the west to attend. Time and place to be determined.
Rest in Peace Alan, you are sorely missed.
