Alvin James Knibbs, affectionately known as Alvin, peacefully passed away on March 7, 2025, at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. Born August 4, 1940, in Fort William, Ontario, Alvin lived a life full of love, devotion, and dedication to his family, community, and the natural world around him.
Alvin’s journey began in the town of Fort William, where his strong character and kind heart were shaped. It was through a chance blind date that Alvin met Willy, the love of his life. Their connection was instant and unbreakable, leading to 63 wonderful years of marriage. Together, they built a life of joy, laughter, and shared dreams. Alvin was a proud father to Danny (Jennifer), Heather (John), and Tracy (Marc), and a devoted grandfather to Bradley, Rachel, Brandon, Alexis, Sabrina, Martina, and Daniel. His greatest joy came from being a family man, and the love he poured into his children and grandchildren leaves a legacy that will live on for generations.
Alvin’s work life was just as fulfilling; he was a skilled tradesman and dedicated 43 years to Thunder Bay Pulp and Paper, retiring as an Insulator in 1997. His versatility in his roles earned him the respect and admiration of his co-workers. Beyond his vocation, Alvin was deeply involved in his community, always ready to lend a hand and share his skills with others.
A man of many interests and talents, Alvin was a proud member of the Connaught Lodge No. 511, and a member of the Scottish Rite of Valley Thunder Bay from 2016 until his passing. His involvement reflected his broader commitment to the principles of brotherhood, charity, and self-improvement.
Outside of work, Alvin had a true love for the outdoors. His camp, a cherished haven, was where he spent countless weekends and holidays fishing, tinkering, and welcoming loved ones. For over 30 years, it was a gathering place for family and friends, where grandchildren eagerly looked forward to spending time with their “Poppy.” Alvin’s simple joy came from being with family, creating lasting memories, and turning every gathering into something special.
Those who knew Alvin would describe him as loving, generous, and always willing to help. He had a remarkable ability to fix anything that was broken and would never hesitate to offer assistance to others. His kindness extended far beyond his immediate family, touching the lives of many.
We would like to thank, the doctors, and nursing staff of 2C of the TBRHSC, for their special care of Alvin near the end.
Though Alvin’s passing leaves a void in the hearts of all who loved him, his spirit will continue to inspire and guide us. His life was a testament to love in action, and his memory will live on in the stories and hearts of his family and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held to honour Alvin’s legacy at a date, yet to be determined.
Rest in peace, Alvin, and thank you for everything.
You will be deeply missed, but your love and strength will never be forgotten.
