“I was given the gift of life, and now I have given it back.”
Mr. Antonio (Tony) Berti, of 819 Chamberlain Street, Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada, passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side, on Friday March 23, 2018 at Roseview Manor. Tony was born in Bisenti, Italy, on June 25, 1932. He proudly served in the Italian Army in his youth, and later found employment in Switzerland. After learning of the great opportunities in Canada from his wife’s family, he immigrated to Thunder Bay, Ontario in 1972 to join them in order to pursue a better life for himself and his family. He found employment in the construction as well as the grain elevator industries in Thunder Bay.
Tony is survived by his wife Maria, who were happily married for 58 years, his two sons John, and his wife Darlene, Bruno, and his wife Keli, with granddaughters Janessa, Cassandra, Elle, and great grandkids Mason and Harper. He also leaves behind his brother Fiorindo, and his wife Gemma in Italy, and his loving in-laws Argentina D’Angelo, Palmina Rizzetto, Benny Melchiorre, and his wife Eva, and numerous nephews and nieces in both Italy and Canada. Tony was predeceased by his parents Giovanni and Grazia, his sisters Erminia, Dora, Sabina and Anna, by his father and mother in-law Angelo and Elisabetta Melchiorre, his deceased in-laws Pasquale and Giuseppina DiMarco, Rocco D’Angelo, Giulio Rizzetto, and his deceased nieces Leta Berko and Maria Perrier.
Tony was a humble and a gentle person and loved being surrounded by his family. When he wasn’t working in his garden, you would surely find him watching Italian soccer or winning and laughing loudly at card games. He was a proud and longtime member of the Italian Society of Port Arthur, volunteering much of his time bringing his culture to the local community.
