It is with sadness that the family of Bette Jane Baskin, known as BJ, announce her passing on November 30th, 2024, at the age of 77. BJ faced many medical struggles in her last few years, tackling each one with courage and hope. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend who cared deeply for her loved ones. Her nurturing presence will be greatly missed.
BJ was born on July 17, 1947, in Fort William, Ontario to parents George and Dorothy Bicknell. She and her two sisters enjoyed a wonderful childhood leaving them with cherished memories. BJ was a proud graduate of Fort William Collegiate and Confederation College. Her administrative career began at Great Lakes Paper Mill, followed by Confederation College and most recently Thunder Bay Children’s Aid Society (CAS). Her career was fulfilling in many ways including the development of lifelong friendships extending into her retirement.
Together BJ and her husband Vic raised a beautiful family in their forever home overlooking Vickers Park in Thunder Bay. Any time spent with family was a true gift to BJ. There was nothing better than visiting with family, and most importantly, the pride and joy of her life, her grandchildren. BJ’s dedication to her children and grandchildren’s activities was her life's priority. She was always there to support her loved ones. Her grandchildren, who fondly referred to her as “Grammy,” could always count on her cheering them on at skating, soccer, swimming, and school functions until the end of her life.
BJ was blessed with many friends and she was genuinely invested in the lives of those around her, always wanting the best for everyone. Making others feel special is something she did very well. She found great joy in being an involved member of the community, both as a volunteer, particularly with CAS, and as an active member of First Wesley United Church. She loved to travel and enjoyed many trips including special family visits to the UK, British Columbia and Prince Edward Island.
BJ is survived by her son Michael (Carolyn Barr), daughter Kim Begin (Jason), stepson Scott (Joy), grandchildren Chris, Shaun, Nevynn, Maeve, Leo, Emersyn and Quinn, and sisters Beverly Bicknell and Marjorie Diplock (Wayne Parks) as well as nephews and extended family across Canada. She was predeceased by her husband, Vic, her parents, George and Dorothy, and her nephew, Ryan Adams.
BJ’s family would like to thank Dr. Laferriere, and staff at the Cancer Centre for their genuine and thoughtful care over the past few years.
Cremation has taken place, and a Celebration of her Life will be held on December 11th, 2024, at 11am at First Wesley United Church. A live stream of the service will be available at www.youtube.com/@FirstWesleyThunderBay. Private interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to PRO Kids or a charity of your choice.
