Mr. Derek Michael Olsen, age 23 years, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, April 27, 2014.
Derek was born in Thunder Bay on December 30, 1990 to Bernadette and Dennis Olsen. He attended St. Ignatius High School and later worked at St Andrew’s Cemetery.
He loved the outdoors and adventurous activities including snowboarding, bmxing, dirt biking, riding his snow machine and his quad.
He will be lovingly remembered by his parents, sister Dayna, grandparents Paul and Inge Olsen and Millicent Gumieny, aunts and uncles Elsa Olsen (Dave Hainrich), Richard, Zane, Kevin and Cory Gumieny and Genevie (Kevin) McMillan, and cousins Cody and Jenna McMillan, and Ryan, Kayla and Trevor Bauche.
He was predeceased by his grandfather Peter Gumieny.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 1, 2014 when family and friends will gather in St. Patrick’s Cathedral for the Funeral Mass beginning at 10:30 a.m. celebrated by Msgr. P.M. Stilla V.G.
The inurnment will follow in Our Lady of Charity Mausoleum. Memorial visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 30th from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Sargent & Son Funeral Chapel, 21 N. Court Street, where the Vigil Service will begin at 7 p.m.
As expressions of sympathy memorials to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation Neonatal Care Unit would be appreciated.
