Mr. Donald Basil Johnson age 76 years, passed away unexpectedly in the University of Ottawa Heart Institute following bypass surgery on Saturday, Aug. 21, 2010 with his wife Sonja by his side.
Don was born on March 11, 1934 in Port Arthur to Richard and Ivy Johnson. He met Sonja at the House of Denmark on Lakeshore Drive and they were married in July of 1957. Don dearly loved spending time at camp since the construction in 1981.
He always looked forward to his and Sonja's winter trips to Florida and driving by the ocean daily. Don also loved cooking, especially preparing his soups and stews. He enjoyed gardening, carpentry and shopping. Don was very proud of his children and grandchildren and took an interest in what was going on in their lives. He loved and always looked forward to their visits. As a child he was very close to his grandma Johnson.
Don is survived by his wife Sonja, children Katherine Galvin, son Don Johnson (Vivian) and Elizabeth, grandchildren Sarah (Ryan Cardy), Brea, Braydon and Brennan Johnson, brothers Edward of Vancouver, Gary (Gayle), sister-in-law Anja Jokela of St. Catharines, numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
He was predeceased by his mother Ivy, father Richard, step-father Cliff Cheetham, brother Frederick, son-in-law Glen Galvin, grandsons Cody and Neal Johnson.
Funeral Services for the late Mr. Donald Johnson will be held on Saturday, Aug. 28, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. in Riverside Cemetery with Rev. Ed Long officiating.
Visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday evening from 6 until 9 p.m. in the Everest Funeral Chapel, 299 Waverley Street at Algoma. If friends so desire, donations to the Schizophrenia Society of Ontario would be greatly appreciated.
