With profound sadness, the family of Dwight Stephen Listmayer, age 65, announces his passing at St. Joseph’s Hospice in Thunder Bay, Ontario, on Wednesday, June 23, 2021, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Dwight was born in Port Arthur, Ontario, on July 23, 1955, to Stephen Joseph Listmayer and Mary Mona (Peltier) Listmayer. After graduating from Lakehead University in 1975 with a BA in Psychology, he began a career in the insurance industry, which led him to Sudbury, Ontario in 1980.
Dwight was delighted at the birth of his three children and welcomed them into his loving arms. As a devoted father, he took an active role in their upbringing and proudly supported their academic and extra-curricular pursuits. After a number of years, Dwight left the insurance industry to pursue a career in education and received great satisfaction from his work with children and teenagers.
Since 2009, Dwight spent his retirement years back in Thunder Bay, volunteering his time to various charities and offering encouragement to everyone he encountered. An entertainer by nature, Dwight shared his gifts of singing and playing guitar all over Thunder Bay. He had a strong bond with his father as they enjoyed many cups of coffee, breakfast, countless late night discussions, and road trips to the Barrie Automotive Show. Both his mother and his father appreciated the wonderful meals he prepared and his devotion to them.
At an early age, he developed a lifelong passion for automobiles, especially classic cars, and will be remembered for attending cruise nights in Sudbury with his immaculate 1957 Chevy. His passions for guitars and cars led him to becoming quite proficient at repairing both. His outgoing personality resulted in many friendships made throughout his lifetime
Dwight will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by his partner Joyce Lyytinen; children Alanna (Travis) Bechard, Andrew Listmayer, and Amy Listmayer of Sudbury, ON,; His stepchildren Wayne Lyytinen, Carl Lyytinen and Eric Lyytinen (Deseraie); as well as step granddaughters Miah, Kaylie, Chloe and Laila; mother Mona Listmayer; sisters Janet (Bernard) Chan of Richmond, BC, and Anita (Frank) Caruso; and nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was predeceased by his father Stephen in 2019, and younger brother Warren in 1992.
The family extends its deepest gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and support staff at both the TBRHSC 1A Oncology and St. Joseph’s Hospice for the amazing care and compassion given to Dwight and his family during his illness. A private interment service will be held at Riverside Cemetery, officiated by Reverend George Porter. As expressions of sympathy, donations to the TBRHS Foundation - Northern Cancer Fund would be appreciated. Arrangements are in care of the Sargent & Son Funeral Directors, 21 N. Court Street.
