It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of a dear husband, father, and Gigi, on Thursday April 3, 2025. We say goodbye with deepest gratitude for having had him in our lives and for knowing with certainty that he held us closely at his core. Born in Horsey Ontario in 1936, Ed was born to Alec and Ksenia Kalyta and was brother to Jean.

Ed was raised and educated in Fort William where he attended Crawford Street elementary school moving on to graduate from Vocational HS. During this time, he excelled at hockey and was presented with the opportunity to try out for the Montreal Canadians. A memory which Ed spoke of with honour and humility.

He married his high school sweetheart, Marilyn, and together they raised four children while he established himself in the real estate and appraisal fields. Throughout his extended career, he was well respected and formed lifelong friends to whom he remained connected in the decades ahead.

He served as vice-president (82-84) and then president (87-88) of the Real Estate Board of Thunder Bay, was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and in his dancing days the Harmony Hoedowners. Ed was a member of the Fort William Country Club where he played faithfully every Wednesday with his band of buddies until grandchildren duty called.

As life permitted, Ed and Marilyn travelled throughout Canada and the United States visiting friends and family. However, he was always happiest in his own backyard tending to his garden or watching his grandchildren enjoying the pool. He will be loved and remembered by many dear family and friends, most especially by his wife of 67 years Marilyn, sons James and Kevin (Viktoria Kimmerle), daughters Charlene Curran and Janice Granholm (Kevin). Adored grandchildren Viktoria Kalyta (fiancé Ryan), Lukas Granholm (girlfriend Tessa), and Kendra Granholm.

He was predeceased by his parents, Alec and Ksenia Kalyta, sister and brother-in-law Jean and Bill Stasiuk, son-in-law Shayne Curran, mother and father-in-law Nick and Evelyn Fratpietro, brother-in-law George Gordon.

Funeral Services for the late Mr. Edward Kalyta will be held at 12:00 noon on Tuesday April 22, 2025, in St. Agnes Parish 1019 Brown Street with Father James celebrating. Visitation beginning at 11:00am. A private family Interment will take place at a later time. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may include donations to St. Joseph’s Foundation of Thunder Bay.

The family extends a heartfelt thanks to Dr. Cole, Dr. Holzapfel, and Dr. Migay for their care, kindness and compassion. A special thanks to our palliative and hospice care angels Sharol, Crystal, Theresa, Holly and Nadia.
