Edward Frank Nieckarz, aged 82 years, passed away peacefully the morning of February 17th at St. Joseph’s Care Group surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Fort William on October 25th, 1932, after attending local schools, Ed joined the army in 1950 at the age of 18.
He proudly served in Korea with the 1st and 3rd Battalions, Royal Canadian Regiment (Infantry). Ed was an avid sports enthusiast and fondly remembered his football days with the Fort William Redskins. He was employed for 34 years at the Lakehead Psychiatric Hospital, retiring as a rehabilitation counselor in 1990.
Ed married Stella Malchuk in 1957 and they had 56 wonderful years together. Ed’s passion was for his family, especially his grandchildren. “Pa” as he was known to them was their most loyal fan.
Ed is survived by his wife Stella, daughter Danita (Dee) Haber (Randy), son Edward (Tracey), grandchildren Amanda Epp (Jason), Brendan, Paige and Evan and three great-grandsons, Cody, Logan and Parker. Also survived by brother-in-law Walter (Margot) Malchuk and numerous nieces and nephews. Ed was predeceased by his parents Mary and John Kowalski, brother Stan (Agnes) and in-laws Maryan and Mary Malchuk.
Cremation has taken place. Funeral services for Ed will be held Friday, February 20th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Dominic’s Church. A private family interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation (Cardiac Fund), The Alzheimer’s Society of Thunder Bay or the charity of your choice.
Edward Nieckarz will be remembered in the Blake Funeral Chapel Memorial Grove. Annual dedication service Sunday, June 12, 2016.
