Eila Mullo

It is with deepest sadness that the family of Eila Helena Mullo (Nieminen), nee Lindfors, advises of her peaceful death on Wednesday, August 17, 2022, with family by her side.

Eila was born in Noormarkku, Finland, on October 25, 1930, to Kalle and Hilma Lindfors. As one of six children, and losing her father to World War II, growing up was challenging and everyone had to pitch in. She would often talk about how, at a young age, she delivered mail, either on foot or on skis, to the entire community. She also reflected how she looked after her two younger brothers while her mother and older siblings went off to work to support the family.

In 1949, she married Hugo Nieminen and, in 1952, they sailed across the ocean with their 4-month-old daughter to the land of opportunity, landing in Halifax and settling in and residing in Ware Township until 2004. While Hugo worked away from home five days out of seven, she was in charge of running the household and looking after a functioning farm. It was her Finnish “Sisu” that kept her on top of all that responsibility. She had a hand in looking after all of her grandchildren when they were young and their parents worked. They all loved Mummu’s cooking and baking, pulla and pannukakko being the favourites.

Eila was an avid knitter and kept everyone in homemade socks, mittens and hats for years. Her family looked forward every Christmas to the huge box that contained all sizes and colours of an entire years’ worth of knitting. Her hands were never idle. She always had some knitting on the go, even while watching television.

In 2005, Hugo passed away. Mom, through her connection with her church, met Arvo Mullo and the two were married on May 19, 2007. They had a happy life together in their new home on Dublin Avenue. When Arvo became ill ten years later, they moved to Good Shephard Village, where she lived until going into the hospital.
Eila will be lovingly remembered by her daughters, Paula Ojala and Tuula (Michael) Maunula; also, by her grandchildren, Vicki (Jani) Matikainen, Katrina Maunula, Liisa (Ray) Okoh and Mikko (Caitlyn) Maunula; by great-grandchildren, Mia and Jacob Boulanger, Karissa and Kaleb Okoh and Keltie and Isaac Maunula. Two brothers, Matti and Vaino Lindfors, and other family survive in Finland. Eila was predeceased by her granddaughter, Lori Boulanger; her husband, Arvo Mullo; her husband, Hugo Nieminen; her mother and father; brother, Otto Hiidenmaki; sister and brother-in-law, Laila and Tauno Valli; sister and brother-in-law, Lahja and Vaino Vahero.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 23rd at 11:00 am at Hildale Lutheran Church, 321 Hilldale Road, followed by interment in Riverside Cemetery.

Donations can be made to FELM or Lutheran Community Care.
