With sadness, I announce the passing of my dear mother Eini on September 27, 2023 in St. Joseph’s Hospital, Hospice Unit.

Eini was born June 28, 1932 to Esteri and Niilo Jouppila in Vahakyro, Finland, and raised in Isokyro. Eini and her younger sister Martta immigrated to Canada in 1951. In 1955, while working as a cookee at the Newaygo bush camp, she met Toivo. Their romance quickly blossomed and they married in August 1956. They celebrated 63 years of marriage before Toivo’s passing in 2019.

Family, friends, camping, travelling, entertaining, swimming and cross-country skiing were all a great joy and wonderful part of Eini’s well lived life. She worked in the food services department of the LPH until her retirement in 1992.

Eini was a loving, kind and gentle woman to everyone she knew. She will be deeply missed by daughter Joanne and spouse Chris, sister Martta in Kingston, ON, brother Reino in Finland, nieces and nephews in Canada and Finland, and by her friends.

She was predeceased by her husband Toivo, sister Toini and her parents.

I would like to thank the doctors and nurses of TBRHSC and St. Joseph’s Hospice for their care and compassion over these last 3 weeks. Special thanks to all the Chartwell Hilldale staff and my mothers’ friends at the residence for making the last 16 months enjoyable and comfortable. Finally, my heartfelt thanks to Judy, Lenore and Linda for all you’ve done, continue to do, and your friendship with both my mother and I.

Funeral Services for Eini will take place on Thursday, October 5, 2023 beginning at 11:00 am in the Chapel of Harbourview Funeral Centre, presided by Pastor Sirpa Tolppanen. Visitation will be held on hour prior. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

If friends so desire, donations may be made in Eini’s memory to Hilldale Lutheran Church or a charity of choice.
