Mrs. Elizabeth (Betty) Agnes Kallos, passed away peacefully on a bright, sunny morning, Wednesday, February 11, 2015, at the age of 89 (12 days short of her 90th birthday).
Betty was born in Fort William on February 23, 1925, and grew up on Heron Street with her parents and 6 siblings. As a youngster she attended St. Peter’s School and later worked at Canada Car, Potter and Kerr, Woolworths, Rustcraft Greeting Cards, and famously Laura Secord. On July 1st 1954, Betty married Jack Kallos, and they built their lives in Thunder Bay with their son Jack Jr. Betty was an active member of the St. Patrick’s Cathedral church community, participating in the choir, ministry of the sick and serving as a Eucharistic minister.
A very important role in Betty’s life was her membership in the Catholic Women’s League, having recently celebrated her 60th year with the CWL. She was an active member, devoting countless hours to selflessly serving the league and the church. Betty was honoured to receive the CWL Maple Leaf Service Pin, which recognized her exceptional dedication.
Outside of her church involvement, Betty spent her time at the Fort William Curling Club, volunteered for Meals on Wheels, and enjoyed her weekly knitting club. Most importantly, Betty cherished her time with her family and friends, especially her time spent at Uncle Rudy's camp with all of the kin, weekend after weekend (volleyball anyone?).
Left behind to miss her and love her always are her husband Jack, son Jack Jr. (Lynda), grandchildren Ashley (Chris) Palmer and Taylor (Kaytie), daughter-in-law Shelley (Steve), sisters Rosemarie (Walter) Wychopen, Yvonne (John) Barabash, brother Rudy (Mary) Migay as well as 19 nieces and nephews, 44 great nieces and nephews, and numerous friends, most importantly, Gordon and Diane Bailey and their daughters who were like family as well. Betty was predeceased by her parents Louis and Anna Migay, sisters Theresa (Joe) Haviar, Anne (Pete) Haviar and Julie (“Pets”) Backor and baby brother Stanislaas.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 17, 2015, when family and friends will gather for Funeral Mass at 11:00am, at St. Patrick's Cathedral celebrated by Rev. Msgr. P.M. Stilla V.G. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Betty’s name to the St. Joseph’s Foundation of Thunder Bay or a charity of your choice.
Elizabeth Kallos will be remembered in the Blake Funeral Chapel Memorial Grove. Annual dedication service Sunday, June 12, 2016.
