Gail Speak

On August 10, 2022, the world lost a magnificent woman. The family of Gail Speak are devastated to announce her passing after a long and valiant battle with cancer.

Gail was born November 5, 1953, to William and May Kmill. Living her early years in small logging camps with her 2 brothers Larry and Donny and later moving to Thunder Bay. She attended Vance Chapman elementary school, Lakeview High School and went on to become a registered nurse. She worked in various medical settings including Dawson Court, CNIB and the LPH. As a natural caregiver and nurturer, nursing was a fitting career choice. Gail spent her time caring for others in both her professional and personal life. She had a calm demeanor and the kindest heart. Throughout her life, she consistently put the needs of others ahead of her own.

In 1976, she married her late husband William Speak and together they had two children, Heather, and Billy. Gail devoted herself to her children and made sure that she was an active parent at all school and extracurricular activities. With her unconditional love she helped celebrate successes and ease sorrows.

Gail was elated when her grandchildren began to arrive. She was so proud of their every accomplishment whether big or small. Gail was the grandmother who found it exceedingly difficult to say no. She could often be found jumping on the trampoline, going for a bike ride, or assisting with various craft projects. She loved every moment spent with Carter, Kennedy, Ryder, Bowen, Billy Jean, and Levi.

We will forever miss your wonderful sense of humor, warm embrace, and the way you made us all feel loved.
Gail was predeceased by her husband William Speak, parents William and May Kmill, brother-in-law Doug Speak, and sister-in-law Sylvia Speak.

She is survived by her children Heather Speak (Sean) and Bill Speak (Jen), Grandchildren Levi, Carter, Kennedy, Ryder, Billy Jean, and Bowen. Brothers Larry Kmill (Jane), and Donny Kmill (Caterina), sister-in-law Cathy Horychuk (Tom), and brother-in-law Ron Speak. As well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

A special thank you to Gail’s homecare nurses Katie, Faith, Jeff, and Jesse. The family is eternally grateful for your compassion and excellent care during this challenging time.

As per Gail’s wishes, a private family gathering will be held at a later date.
