George “Terry” Ashmore

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of George “Terry” Ashmore after a short illness. Terry passed away peacefully at home with his family at his side on September 29th, 2024, at the age of 82.

Born on July 25th, 1942, in Sheffield, England, he often spoke of his childhood and what it was like growing up post-World War 2 – it was a difficult time. Terry was a very intelligent child and was selected to attend the only academic Grammar school in Sheffield, rare for a child of working-class parents. He found his love of books at an early age. By his best estimate, he had read over 5000 books in his life.

At the age of 15, he met his true love Ann. They were meant to be together and were married in 1963. Through thick and thin and ups and downs, they always stood by each other and when she passed in 2004, he missed her dearly. In 1964, they had a son Craig, and in 1966 decided to emigrate to Canada to pursue a better life. Even though he was proud of his British heritage, he never regretted moving to Canada – he loved this Country!

Terry found work at Dow Chemical/Great Lakes Paper shortly after arriving in Canada and enjoyed 37 years working at “the mill”, as he often said, “I worked with some great people and a few idiots”. He retired in 2005 when he decided on a January morning it was just too cold to go to work anymore.

Terry loved people, loved to talk and was interested in what they had to say, he had a unique sense of humour, and he loved to make people laugh! He loved music and was a soccer fanatic, he loved to read and was a Jeopardy master! Most of all he loved his family and the wonderful times and dinners we shared over the years. Terry loved to see in-laws Bernie and Margaret Hogan and talk about the old days at the Mill with Bernie.

Terry is survived by son Craig (Sharon), grandchildren Kylee Jones (Derek), Nathan Ashmore and Alyssa Couzelis. great-grandchildren Addisyn, Kaia, Kashtyn, Isa and Yara, brother-in-law Dexter and very good friend Ray.

Terry was predeceased by his wife Ann and great-granddaughter Leila Jones.

Thank you to Jeff and Jessie from Paramed, Nurse Practitioner Richard and Maneesha from Bayshore who came into his home and provided such great care during his last month.

Cremation has taken place, with interment to take place at Sunset Memorial Gardens. As per Terry’s wishes, no service will be held.

In lieu of flowers or donations, it was Terry’s wish that the people who cared about him spend time with friends and family and enjoy a nice dinner, a few beverages, a cigar if you choose and a few laughs. Enjoy your life and cherish your loved ones!
