It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of our father and grandfather, George Medwid. George passed away peacefully on February 14, 2025 at the age of 80, surrounded by his family and friends who loved him dearly.

George was born in Port Arthur in 1944, and spent his younger years following his passion for baseball, which inspired his love for coaching youth baseball. George was a pipe-fitter by trade, and he worked his way up to an eventual position as Maintenance Supervisor at Abitibi Price, where he was well respected for his knowledge and skills. After the closure of the mill in 1991, George relocated to the Malette Mill in Smooth Rock Falls, where he was Superintendent of Services until his retirement.

Although he had a gruff exterior, George had a heart of gold and would be the first to step up to help a friend. Over the years, he hosted many get togethers at his home with family and friends, sharing amazing stories with all. He enjoyed his hockey nights and time spent with close friends Mark, Louella and Billy. He will be missed by many.

George is survived by his children Dwayne Medwid (Jennifer), Leigh Ann Medwid (Devin), Clint Medwid (Laurie), grandchildren Jordan, Hayden, Ashleigh, Cara, Max and great-grandson Skyler, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his loving wife Joan Medwid (Hodges), parents Sam and Anne Medwid, and brother Bert Medwid .

We would like to express our sincere appreciation to all the staff at Thunder Bay Regional Hospital who assisted in George’s care, particularly on floor 2B.

In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place. George loved dogs, and if one should so desire, memorial donations can be made to the Thunder Bay Humane Society or Northern Reach Rescue Network. Online condolences may be expressed at www.sargentandson.com.
