February 9, 1955 – March 7, 2025

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of Gilbert Deschamps, B.A., J.D., dearly loved brother and uncle, after a brief illness. Gilbert’s vibrant spirit and infectious laughter brought joy to all who knew him. He was a shining light in the lives of his family, lighting up every room he entered with warmth and humour.

Gilbert was a cherished brother to Mona, with a bond built on love, laughter, and mutual respect. As a Godfather to Paul, Vanessa, and Cecelia, Gilbert's influence was profound. He provided them with a steady hand of support, always there to offer guidance, love, and a strong example of integrity. As an uncle, he was a teacher to his nieces and nephews, always guiding them with wisdom, patience, and encouragement. His lessons went beyond knowledge; he instilled in them the values of kindness, compassion, and the importance of being true to oneself.

A passionate advocate for two-spirited people, Gilbert devoted much of his time and energy to promoting understanding and acceptance. As an Anishinaabemowin speaker and teacher, he proudly carried the language and traditions of his heritage, sharing the stories, culture, and wisdom of his People. His dedication to creating a more inclusive world was only matched by his love for learning. Gilbert was always reading, always seeking new knowledge, and always eager to share it with others. His commitment to education led him to earn a law degree, a testament to his belief in the power of knowledge and his desire to make a positive difference in the world.

Gilbert’s legacy will live on in the hearts of his family and community. He is now reunited with his cherished family members who preceded him: Mom, Pop, Eva, Frank, Abe, Dave, Malvina, Wilfred, Blanche, Clifford, Wanda, and Jean. His laughter, love, kindness, advocacy, and contributions to preserving the Anishinaabemowin language will never be forgotten.

Miigwech, Gilbert, for sharing your unique and beautiful spirit with us.

Your light will continue to shine, and your impact will live on in all who knew you.

A Celebration of Life will be held in June 2025 to honour Gilbert's memory.
