Giovanni Buonocore

It is with profound sadness that the family announces the passing of our dearly loved husband, father and nonno, Giovanni Buonocore, on March 12, 2017. A longtime resident of Thunder Bay, Giovanni passed away peacefully at Pioneer Ridge in his 90th year with his family by his side.

Giovanni was born on August 11, 1926 in Conflenti, Catanzaro, Italy. He immigrated to Canada in the early 1950’s, settling in Port Arthur. He initially began working in the railroad industry for CP Rail and then moved to the construction sector where he worked through-out Northwestern Ontario. He culminated his employment at the Abititi Provincial Paper Mill where he retired in 1988.

He was a member of the Italian Society of Port Arthur, and both the Senior’s Club and Holy Name Society of St. Anthony’s Church.

Giovanni was a gentle, kind and good natured man who found his deepest joy in the simple pleasures of life. He was an avid gardener, enjoyed playing cards with his friends, going to the family camp on Lake Superior and spending time with his wife and family, who formed the foundation of his beautiful soul. His character was defined by his deep rooted values of family, friends, integrity, honesty, generosity, compassion and love of all those, whose hearts he touched.

Giovanni will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of 63 years, Rosetta, sons Sal and Sergio (Sonia), grandchildren Caroline (Josh), Allison (James), Jacqueline (Trevor), Jonathon and numerous nieces and nephews throughout Italy.

He was predeceased by his parents, Salvatore and Elvira, his two brothers Ferdinando and Raffaele and his sister Maria in Italy.

The family would like extend their warmest gratitude to Dr. Scali and all of the staff at Pioneer Ridge for the excellent care and attention they provided to Giovanni over the many years.

The funeral service for the late Mr. Giovanni Buonocore will be held at 10:30 am on Friday, March 17, 2017 at St. Anthony’s Church, presided by Father Luigi Filippini. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday, March 16, 2017 starting at 6:00pm at the Everest Funeral Chapel, 299 Waverley Street at Algoma, with Vigil Prayers offered at 8pm.

In lieu of flowers, should friends so desire, donations may be made in memory of Giovanni to the Alzheimer’s Society of Thunder Bay.

Into the welcoming arms of God will he rest forever in peace.
