It is with sadness and heavy hearts that the family of Giuseppe Tassone, of Tupper St (formerly of Peter St), announce his passing at the TBRHSC on May 5, 2016, after a short illness.

Giuseppe was born in Serra San Bruno, Catanzaro, Italy, on March 25, 1925.  He was the eldest of ten children born to Bruno and Maria Rosaria (Calabretta) Tassone.  His early travels and life adventures brought him to Ottati, Salerno where he met the love of his life, Filomena Grieco.  They were married on February 25, 1952 and together they had four children.

On May 18, 1960, Giuseppe immigrated to Canada in search of a better life for himself and his family, joining his brothers and sisters in Port Arthur, Ontario.  In July 1961, he was reunited with his wife and two eldest children.   Giuseppe worked for CN Rail for 25 years, in various Northwestern Ontario locations, retiring from the Neebing Yard in 1985.  He was a humble, hard working and generous man who always placed his family and friends first.

Giuseppe enjoyed gardening, playing cards, walking and wine-making.  He took great pride in passing on his knowledge of many Italian traditions to his children and grandchildren.  He was a kind and gentle soul who was always willing to lend a helping hand to his family, friends and neighbours.  He was truly happiest at all gatherings surrounded by his close and extended family members and friends.

Giuseppe will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his loving wife of 64 years, Filomena:  his four children, Rosarina Venn, Bruno (Teresa) of Vancouver, Marietta (Bill) Austin and Angelo (Eda); his grandchildren, Ryan (Kelly) Venn, Rebecca (Don) Ross, Michael (Erin) Venn, Joseph David and Thomas Tassone, Christopher and Andrew Austin and Joseph Peter and Matthew Tassone; his great-grandchildren, Maya and Clark Venn, Madeline and Walker Ross and Nathaniel and Lauren Venn; his siblings, Salvatore (Giuseppina) in Italy, Angelina Pisani (Italy), Marietta Larizza, Antonio (Raffaela), Cosimo (Immaculata) and Bruna (Bruno) Larizza; and sisters-in-law Gina Tassone and Maria Grieco (Italy), as well as numerous nieces and nephews in Thunder Bay, Italy and Germany.

Giuseppe was pre-deceased by his parents, father-in-law and mother-in-law Angelo and Virginia Grieco, sister and brother-in-law Rosina and Bruno Caruso, brother Nazzareno and sister and brother-in-law Nazzarena and Salvatore Pelaia, brothers-in-law Nazzareno Larizza and Domenico Pisani and brothers-in-law, Elio and Giovanni Grieco and sister-in-law Margherita Grieco.

The funeral mass for Mr. Giuseppe Tassone will be held on Tuesday, May 10, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church presided by Rev. Luigi Filipinni, with the procession leaving Harbourview Funeral Centre at 10:00 a.m.  A private entombment in Our Lady of Charity Mausoleum will follow. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Monday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. with Prayers beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel of the Harbourview Funeral Centre.

If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Giuseppe’s memory to the TBRHS Foundation, Northern Cardiac Fund or the M.S. Society of Thunder Bay.
