It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of beloved sister, aunt and great-aunt, Helen Challans, at the TBRHSC on May 16, 2024, with her family by her side, at the age of 85. She was born Helen Karpyshyn on April 7, 1939, in Port Arthur and raised on Lincoln Street. She attended Central Public School and Port Arthur Technical & Commercial High School. After graduating, Helen entered the work force at Powell Equipment. She then accepted a job at the Lakehead Psychiatric Hospital as a Medical Secretary where she remained until her retirement.

Helen married the love of her life, Donald Challans, in 1963. Helen and Don enjoyed going to Wisconsin Dells with her sister, Rose and her family to visit friends they had made there. She also looked forward to her shopping trips to Duluth and spending time at the casino. Helen had a close relationship with Rose. They spent a lot of time together, shopping each weekend, having dinner and then trying their luck at the casino. Saturday mornings were often spent out for breakfast and then going to yard sales. Rose will always cherish the memories of their time spent together.

Helen is survived by her sister and best friend Rose Winters; nieces Marianne Hodges (Barry); Michele Zolna and Suzanne Boswell (Vic); nephews Matt Winters (Sherry) and Richard Turcotte (Patti); great-nephews Preston and Brody Winters; great-nieces and nephews; Paul Turcotte and Mark Zolna; Jody and Taryn Boswell; Jennifer Turcotte-Russak and Kristopher Turcotte. The puppies, Gemma and Jaxon will miss auntie’s treats.

Helen was predeceased by her husband of 37 years, Donald, mother Ann Karpyshyn, father Peter Karpyshyn, sister Mary Turcotte and brothers-in-law Robin Winters and John Turcotte.

We want to thank the nursing staff at TBRHSC and St. Joseph’s Hospital for the care provided for Helen these past few months.

As per her wishes, cremation has taken place, and a small family service will be held at a later date.
