Helen (Helene) Duda (nee McNeil) passed away peacefully at home on September 12, 2024, at the age of 86 with family by her side. Born on September 4, 1938, in Fort William, Ontario, she was the cherished daughter of John and Mary (Donald Murray) McNeil (nee Shirback). Helen was predeceased by her sisters Lucy Chaschuck and Margaret Maki, and her brother Donald.  She was survived by her sister Theresa and many cherished nieces and nephews.

Helen made many life-long friends when she worked at the Canadian Grain Commission until 1969.  There she met Ernie Duda, the love of her life and husband for over 50 years. Together they maintained an enduring love and partnership.  They found true happiness doing most everything together.  Helen found her greatest joy in raising their only son Stephen (Mary) and watching “her men” spend time together doing what they loved.  Her immense pride and joy in family grew even more through the milestones and experiences of her three grandsons: Jacob, Owen, and Kyle.

Helen found happiness in the simple pleasures of life through gardening, travelling, and being a point of connection for the family.  Her immaculately maintained home, along with her love for baking and cooking was a space that welcomed many friends and family to create a lifetime of cherished memories.  As an active member of St. Agnus Parish, Helen always showed generosity to her community and her family.

The Family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to those who went above and beyond to support Helen, especially over the last few years.  Funeral services and a reception will be held Friday, September 20th beginning at 12:10 at St Agnes Church, 1019 Brown Street, Thunder Bay.  In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Victoria’s Quilts Canada, Dew Drop Inn, or the Cancer Care Centre at the Regional Health Sciences Centre.
